We stock, weld, and install BFT-compatible gate hardware throughout Ventura, and most welding and fabrication jobs run between $350 and $1,200 installed, depending on what cracked, bent, or corroded. Same-day service is available for most weld repairs in Ventura, Oxnard, and Camarillo when we have the steel on the truck, which we usually do. The typical call starts the same way: a gate that suddenly drags, a hinge that snapped at the weld point, or a post that leaned after someone backed into it. Salt air off the Ventura coast eats BFT gate frames faster than inland owners ever expect, and welds that held fine for a decade let go without much warning.

Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT builds the motor and control side of the equation. The frame, hinges, brackets, and post plates that fail are usually generic steel or aluminum, which means we fabricate and weld for nearly every BFT residential slide or swing setup you’d find in a Ventura backyard. That includes BFT’s Deimos, Phobos, and Aries swing operators, plus the Rigel and E5 slide lines. The compatibility gotcha most owners miss is the mounting plate: BFT swing arms bolt to a steel plate that has to be welded square and level, and if that plate shifts even an eighth of an inch, the motor binds and burns out the capacitor within a season. We template and jig every BFT plate before the first tack weld so the arm sits true.
On the aftermarket question: for the steel itself, a quality local fabrication using 1/4-inch plate or schedule 40 post stock is every bit as good as what BFT ships from the factory, often better in coastal air if we use hot-dip galvanized or powder-coated stock. For the motor brackets and limit switch mounts, we prefer genuine BFT hardware. The tolerances matter more than the brand name.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing
- Gate drags or scrapes on one end. A hinge weld has stretched or cracked, and the gate is dropping at the latch side. This is the most common weld failure we see in Ventura where marine air has been working on the joint for a decade.
- Gate jerks when it starts or stops. The motor is fighting a frame that’s binding at the hinge or roller. The weld usually looks fine from the outside but the backside of the bracket is cracked through.
- Visible rust bleeding from a joint. That orange line running down from a hinge or bracket is water getting into the weld. By the time you see it, the inside of the joint is usually half gone.
- Post leans or wobbles when you push on it. The post plate or the post itself has fatigued. In Ventura’s sandy soil, posts set without enough depth or concrete will move seasonally, and the movement cracks the weld at the base.
- Gate thunks or sags when it closes. A cracked weld on the receiver post lets the gate drop a quarter inch on contact. That drop is the whole weight of the gate landing on a broken joint every single cycle.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For most BFT welding and fabrication work in Ventura, here’s the honest breakdown. A hinge repair or re-weld on a residential gate runs $250 to $450. A post replacement with new plate welded and set in concrete lands between $500 and $900. A full frame rebuild or new gate fabrication starts around $800 and goes up from there based on size and steel weight, with a 16-foot steel slide gate typically running $1,200 to $1,600 fabricated and installed.
What drives the range: steel thickness, whether the post needs to be excavated, and whether we’re matching an existing powder coat or going fresh galvanized. Every quote is written, handed to you before any work starts, and includes labor, materials, and cleanup. We don’t open a ticket until you’ve approved the number on paper. And the whole job carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if a weld fails or a bracket shifts within the year, we come back and fix it free.

DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely identify where the weld failed: look for cracks at the hinge, rust bleed along the plate, or daylight between the bracket and post. You can also safely check the gate’s reveal, meaning whether the gap at top and bottom is even when closed. What you should not do is attempt the weld yourself, even with a borrowed welder. A residential gate weighs 300 to 600 pounds, and a weld that fails under that load while someone is in the arc of the swing is a serious injury waiting to happen. We also see burned BFT control boards from owners who welded with the motor still wired and cooked the circuit with stray current. Disconnect the motor at the breaker, have a real welder do the work, and if you want the job quoted before you commit, call us at (831) 226-7089. Cole Rafferty is the one reading the call notes and standing at the gate with the written price.
FAQs
In Ventura’s coastal air, a properly done galvanized weld on a residential gate typically lasts 12 to 20 years. Raw steel welds, which we see often, last 5 to 8 years before rust fails them. We use galvanized or coated stock on every outdoor BFT job, no exception.
Yes, if the steel around the crack still has thickness. If rust has thinned the material, we cut back to good steel, plate it, and re-weld; if the hinge itself is deformed, we replace it. Either way, you see a written price before we strike an arc.
Most hinge re-welds and plate replacements are done in one visit, usually 2 to 4 hours including setup and cooling. Post replacements need the concrete to set, so those are a day for the work and another day before the gate cycles again.
We stock the common steel: 1/4-inch plate, schedule 40 post stock, hinge sets, and BFT mounting brackets for the Deimos, Phobos, and Rigel lines. Specialty BFT arms and limit mounts we order and typically have in 2 to 3 days in Ventura.
