Linear Access Control Installation: The Ventura Owner’s Guide

Linear access control installation in Ventura typically runs $425 to $1,150 installed, and most swaps are done in one visit. We stock the common Linear access control components on the truck, so if you have a keypad, card reader, or telephone entry unit that’s dead or intermittent, we can usually diagnose it and replace it the same afternoon. Where Ventura owners usually discover the trouble is at the worst possible moment: the keypad stopped reading codes, the card reader quit recognizing fobs, or the telephone entry system stopped buzzing the gate open.

What makes Linear access control wiring different from other brands is that so many Ventura gates were built with Linear hardware in the early 2000s, and those systems are now 15 to 20 years old. The electronics get tired before the mechanical gate. That’s the pattern we see along Ventura Avenue, in Midtown, over near the Kimball area, and up in College. Cole Rafferty has been repairing and replacing these exact Linear units across Ventura County for nearly two decades, including systems along the Ventura Pier corridor where salt air accelerates corrosion on the circuit boards and keypad contacts faster than inland installs. Tell me exactly what it’s doing, and I’ll tell you exactly what it costs to fix it.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear built access control products under the Nortek and Linear Pro Access names, and the two most common families we see in Ventura are the AE series (AE-100, AE-500, AE-1000 telephone entry units) and the AM series (AM-KP keypads, AM-DKP digital keypads). Also still alive and kicking: the older AP-5 card readers and the M3X and M3S keypads that Linear sold for years.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha every Linear owner should know: the AE-100 and AE-500 look nearly identical from the front, but the AE-100 is a single-relay panel that controls one gate, while the AE-500 runs two relays for two gates or a gate plus a pedestrian entry. We have swapped both across Ventura homes and can confirm they are not interchangeable without re-wiring the whole panel. If your unit’s label is sun-faded or missing, pop the faceplate off and look for the model stamp on the main board inside. The stamp is what we need to order the right replacement board or matching aftermarket unit. For OEM versus aftermarket: we install genuine Linear-proprietary components when the customer wants exact factory spec, but for older discontinued models, we also carry solid aftermarket boards that match Linear’s voltage and relay ratings at a lower price. On Linear specifically, we prefer OEM on the AE series because the board fit and weather-seal tolerances matter more than on the keypad-only units. Independent note: Warden Gate Repair Ventura is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with Linear or Nortek.

Signs Your Linear Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Keypad accepts some codes, rejects others. The membrane contacts wear out unevenly. The digits used most often (usually 1, 4, and 7 on a Ventura gate that gets daily package deliveries) die first. A couple of dead keys is the earliest warning sign.
  • Gate buzzes open but the relay chatters. You hit the code, the unit clicks and clicks and clicks, and the gate finally lurches open. That’s a relay going bad on the control board. It’s the single most common Linear access control failure in Ventura’s coastal humidity.
  • Telephone entry unit rings the house but won’t release. You answer, press 9, and nothing happens. The circuit that listens for the DTMF tone from your phone has failed, or the relay isn’t getting the signal. This is a board-level repair or replacement, not a wiring fix.
  • Card reader blinks but doesn’t recognize any fob. The antenna coil or the reader’s RF receiver has gone out. We see this most on Linear AP-5 readers that sit in direct afternoon sun in Ventura’s east-facing entries.
  • Display is dim or shows garbage characters. Moisture has crept past the face gasket and is shorting the display driver. Once a Linear keypad shows random characters, it’s eating itself from the inside and will fail completely within a couple of weeks.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Ventura, a Linear access control installation typically breaks down like this:

  • Keypad-only replacement (AM-KP or similar): $280 to $475 installed, including the new unit, wiring re-termination, and programming your codes.
  • Telephone entry unit replacement (AE-100 or AE-500): $550 to $950 installed, including the panel, relay testing, phone line or cellular bridge check, and code programming for up to 20 residents.
  • Card reader replacement or add-on: $390 to $620 installed, including fob programming for the first 10 fobs.
  • Full access control panel swap with new wiring run: $800 to $1,150 for a complete board, enclosure, and wiring replacement where the existing cable has corroded or been chewed through.

Every one of those numbers includes the part, the labor, the programming, and a written price you agree to before the first screw comes out. We don’t show up with a range and then bill high. We show up, diagnose, and hand you the number. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if any part of the repair fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no cost. That’s in writing, every time.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. What you can safely check yourself: the power supply to the access control unit (is the little green LED lit?), obvious wire breaks at the bottom of the panel where weed trimmers and gardeners do their work, and whether the gate itself moves freely with the manual release. Those checks take ten minutes and might save you a service call.

What you should not do: open a Linear access control panel and start probing the board with a multimeter unless you’re comfortable working around 12V DC and 120V AC in the same enclosure. The power supply steps down from wall voltage inside those boxes, and a wrong probe placement on the AC side can bite hard. Also, mis-wiring the relay output can fry your gate operator’s control board, and that’s not a fun phone call for anyone. We replace the wiring, the board, or the whole unit on the first visit. If you’re not sure, call us at (831) 226-7089 and describe what the unit is doing. The phone advice is free.
